You can Identify a Ford truck model’s year by using the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN has 17 letters and numbers for all vehicles manufactured after 1982. VIN numbers prior to 1982 can be decoded by a local Ford dealer or via a Ford Truck Shop Manual. Each number holds represents specific info about the truck model, and the VIN can be used to identify the individual vehicle, from manufacture to destruction.

Instructions:
Locate the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the vehicle or from the title of the vehicle (if you used the title to check, make sure to match the VIN to the actual vehicle as a double check). VINs are commonly located on a sticker on the driver’s side door jamb and the dashboard, typically on the drivers side up against the front windshield. The dashboard VIN can be seen through the windshield on the driver’s side. Sometimes a flashlight is needed to properly see the VIN on the dashboard or door jamb sticker.

Locate the tenth (10th) digit of the VIN. It may be a letter or a number.

Utilize this table to determine the model year of the vehicle:

Tips

The other numbers and letters of the VIN also have specific meanings. The second character identifies the manufacturer. Ford is represented by F. Digits 4 thru 8 identify vehicle options/features such as body style, engine type and model.

Trucks manufactured prior to 1980 have Vehicle Identification Codes, but they are specific to the manufacturer and will need to be decoded by a dealer or a Ford Truck Shop Manual.
